What You Will Need:
A fun outdoor activity to try with your mentee is the human sundial! Long before the invention of clocks, people were able to tell time based on the shadows on the ground. You and your mentee can discuss the science behind telling time while getting a little sunlight as well.
To begin, choose a sunny, flat area of concrete that has enough space to make your sundial. Next, see which direction a shadow is cast, and draw your sundial out in that direction. Use your string to make a large, clock-like circle on the ground. Using the yardstick or ruler, create the numbers on a clock exactly one foot apart beginning at 7. They should look like the image above. Once you have numbered your sundial, draw a line the length of a yardstick in the middle. Then, create boxes to represent the months like in the photo above. When you are done you should be able to stand on the current month and be a human sundial!
