What You Will Need:
A fun outdoor activity to try with your mentee is the human sundial! Long before the invention of clocks, people were able to tell time based on the shadows on the ground. You and your mentee can discuss the science behind telling time while getting a little sunlight as well.
To begin, choose a sunny, flat area of concrete that has enough space to make your sundial. Next, see which direction a shadow is cast, and draw your sundial out in that direction. Use your string to make a large, clock-like circle on the ground. Using the yardstick or ruler, create the numbers on a clock exactly one foot apart beginning at 7. They should look like the image above. Once you have numbered your sundial, draw a line the length of a yardstick in the middle. Then, create boxes to represent the months like in the photo above. When you are done you should be able to stand on the current month and be a human sundial!
Happy Earth Week, Everyone! The week leading up to Earth Day is a celebration all its own called Earth Week, and as we approach the 46th annual Earth Day on April 22nd, we hope you take this chance to talk to your mentee about the environment and our planer. This week's Monday Activity is a compilation of activities you can do with your mentee this week to celebrate Earth Week and Earth Day.
Earth Day Word Search
If your mentee loves puzzles, try an Earth Day Word Search puzzle to celebrate the occasion!
In honor of the creepy crawlies coming out for Spring and our April Mentor Connect, which you can view a recap of here, our Monday Activity is an adorable way to help your mentee manage their anger express when something is "bugging" them.
What You Will Need:
A Pen or Marker
Construction Paper or Colored Pencils
In the center of the paper draw a bug like the one above. Be sure to leave enough room to write on the body of the bug. Next, you and your mentee should come up with a few things they can say when something upsets them that get their point across, yet are respectful and productive. On the body of the bug, you two can add a few things that your mentee can do when they are upset, but not ready to talk about it yep. The finished product should look similar to the one pictured.
